Sweet cinnamon rolls from the BBQ

Perfect for Easter: warm, sticky and bursting with flavour

Nothing says Easter quite like the smell of freshly baked sweet bread. And yes: you can make this right on the BBQ. These cinnamon rolls are soft on the inside, slightly crispy on the outside and deliciously sticky thanks to the cinnamon sugar. The ideal recipe to make the whole family happy! Not too difficult and absolutely delicious!

What do you need?

For the dough:

  • 250 g flour
  • 7 g dried yeast
  • 150 ml lukewarm milk
  • 30 g sugar
  • 40 g butter (melted)
  • a pinch of salt

For the filling

  • 50 g butter (softened)
  • 60 g brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

And to make it extra tasty and sweet: cream cheese icing or icing sugar!

Equipment

The session: step by step

1. Making the dough
Mix the milk, yeast and sugar and leave to stand for 5 minutes. Then add the flour, salt and melted butter and knead into a smooth dough. Leave to rise for about 1 hour until it has doubled in size.

If you’d like to give it a slightly different twist, add a little grated orange zest to the dough.

2. Rolling and filling
Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Brush the butter over the top and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll up tightly and cut into slices.

3. Preparing the barbecue
Heat your barbecue to around 180°C using Grill Fanatics charcoal. Create an indirect cooking zone using a plate setter. If you want to use smoking wood, now is the time. Add 1 or 2 pieces for a subtle flavour.

4. Grilling
Place the rolls in a greased skillet. Grill for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

5. Finishing
Leave to cool slightly, then finish with icing or icing sugar.

Serve on a sturdy board and you’ve got a lovely addition to your Easter brunch.
