Essential Grill Fanatics maintenance tips for kamado and pellet barbecues

The first rays of sunshine are appearing again. Time to go outside. Time to light the fire again.

Has your kamado or pellet barbecue been sitting idle for a few months? Then proper preparation is no luxury. With a little attention, you can ensure that your barbecue performs safely, stably and powerfully again. Just as you would expect.

Start with a technical check

A kamado is robust, but its parts deserve attention. Check the dome gasket and the air inlets. Do they still seal properly? A kamado that does not seal properly loses control over temperature.

Inspect the ceramic and deflector stones for cracks. Small hairline cracks are normal. If you see actual breaks, replace the part in good time. For the Large kamado, Grill Fanatics offers crescent-shaped deflector stones and other suitable accessories.

Also check your charcoal. Is it still dry? Damp charcoal burns poorly and causes unstable heat. Use a grill basket to easily remove old charcoal from your kamado. Give it a shake, small residues will fall out and you will be left with usable pieces. Are you unsure about the quality? Replacement is always better than frustration during your first session. Store your charcoal properly!

Tips & Tricks

Pellet barbecue: focus on the supply

With a pellet barbecue, everything revolves around a constant and trouble-free pellet supply. Pellets that have absorbed moisture can clump together and cause blockages. Empty the hopper and check that everything is clean and dry.

Clean the fire pot and remove any ash residue. Simply vacuuming it is often sufficient. Immediately check the fan and air ducts. A pellet smoker only functions optimally when air can circulate freely.

Store your pallets in a suitable storage box.

Thorough cleaning

Now comes the real work.

A kamado grill is visibly revitalised by a burn-off. Let it run at a high temperature for about 15 minutes. Old grease residues and bacteria will burn off, and you will start again with a clean base.

Clean the grill thoroughly with a sturdy barbecue brush. Cast iron grills should then be treated with a thin layer of oil to prevent drying out and rusting. The cast iron grills and 2-in-1 plancha from Grill Fanatics have a special coating. This makes them less susceptible to rust and easier to maintain, without compromising on performance.

Don’t forget your accessories

A good pitmaster maintains more than just his barbecue.

Check your gloves for wear and tear. Test your thermometer and replace the battery if necessary. Check your cast iron accessories and give them some attention in good time. Small details make the difference between a good and an excellent session.
