Charcoal consists purely of burnt wood. Briquettes are made from the fine residue of charcoal bound with natural binder. In use, the difference lies in the fact that charcoal ignites faster and gives higher temperatures. Briquettes burn longer and more evenly.

Larger pieces burn longer and provide consistent heat. However, too many large pieces can hinder oxygen flow, so a good mix of large and slightly smaller pieces works best.

Hardwood charcoal is best for high temperatures, while softwood charcoal is ideal for quick grilling sessions.

They try to make our charcoal and briquettes as sustainable as possible. For instance, our coconut briquettes are made from the remains of the coconut. Most of our charcoals are FSC-certified. This means that a new tree is planted for a felled tree.
Our Black Wattle charcoal is made from a native tree that draws a lot of moisture from the soil in South Africa. This tree proliferates of its own accord and so cutting down this native species is a win-win: we have a beautiful charcoal and the farmers in South Africa earn money from ‘weeds’ that bother them a lot.
